VIC: State s bankruptcy rate improves

The rate of personal bankruptcy in Victoria has slowed in the last financial year.

Figures from accountants Hall Chadwick show the number of personal bankruptcies rose just
six per cent - from 5,002 to 5,302 - between 1997-98 and 1998-99.

Hall Chadwick says this compares with a 19.66 per cent rise in the previous period from
1996-97 to 1997-98.

GLENN CRISP, director of the company's insolvency division, says Victoria has out-performed
the other mainland states.

Mr CRISP says 1.134 in 1,000 people declared bankruptcy in Victoria in the period, compared
with 1 in 500 in Queensland.

He says the figures represented a significant recovery for the state.
