QLD: AMA calls for specialists vacancy list

The Australian Medical Association has challenged Queensland Health Minister WENDY
EDMOND to release the list of specialist positions vacant in public hospitals.

Ms EDMOND has said up to 40 specialists are needed to fill the vacancies but many doctors
are reluctant to work in the public health system because it infringes on their private
practices.

AMA Queensland president SHANE SONDERGELD says the state's doctors are prepared to
work with Queensland Health to help fill the vacancies - and won't charge a fortune to
do so.

Dr SONDERGELD says a number of specialists are turned away from the public hospital
because of a lack of funding - although he says Ms EDMOND says there's enough money for
the vacancies.

He says the minister should give doctors a vacancy list.
